Hi everyone,

We’re excited to share draft of the UAS Pathway Standards Roadmap with you.

The standards have been grouped in 10 themes - Competency, Operations, Enterprise Safety Management and Assurance, Flightworthiness, C2 / C3 Link, Digital Trust and Assurance, Airspace Integration, Electronic Conspicuity, Detect and Avoid and Class Marking.

We welcome your feedback, thoughts and comments on the roadmap as a whole in this post. For example, are there any major themes that you think we’ve missed? Are there any ways in which we could improve the roadmap to help advance the industry? Please share your feedback and thoughts in the comments.

We look forward to your comments to produce a valuable resource to advance the industry towards routine UAS BVLOS Operations in integrated airspace at scale.

Please note, we are accepting feedback for this draft of the UAS roadmap for the period between 10 September - 11 October.

Download and view the full roadmap here.

P.S. If you have specific feedback related to a certain theme, feel free to share it in the relevant discussion threads.

ISO 21384 Series - An Introduction to the International UAS Safety and Quality Standards

By Drone Major
Friday at 09:25 in UAS Pathway

For those of you who are interested in knowing what already exists before we start creating terms, definitions and standards, I have attached a simple introduction (originally written for the Drone Delivery Group) to the ISO 21384 series of standards which have been developed over the last 9 years by over 450 experts from around the world.  These standards are focussed on UAS but, the Committee behind this work has recently announced that it will expand it's remit to include Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).  This work will, of course, be focussed on uncrewed systems and will not deal with piloted eVTOL systems as these are already well covered by manned aviation standards and practices for rotorcraft.

These standards are a key bedrock for the development of other standards around the world and, it is my hope that this project refers to them

If you have any comments, questions, or would like to understand how to engage with this important work, please do post here I would be happy to answer your questions.

Hi Robert, thanks for sharing this.

It is a very useful summary of the ISO 21384 series of standards and an insightful context and explanation.

We have included the ISO 21384 series of standards in our roadmap, as you can see in the Flightworthiness and Operations themes, and these are also referred to in our Landscape - https://future-flight.bsigroup.com/forums/forum/24-landscape/

Look forward to your feedback on the UAS Pathway Standards Roadmap overall and on the themes specifically.

Have you had a look at our recommendations?

It would be good to have your input, as your extensive experience in this space would be invaluable.

Thanks and have a great day.

Hi Dimitri,

I'm delighted that the ISO21384 series has been included and I will spend some time over the next few days to review the changes and recommendations and to provide my feedback.  We have an amazing opportunity to regain lost ground on the involvement of standards by industry through your initiative...it's great to see so much discussion around a topic that I have been representing the UK on internationally (pretty much alone) for 9 years and badgering government about for at least 6...

...well done, it's ABT!

@Drone Major and @Dimitri Panagio thank you for sharing your insights. Just as a note, I am moving your discussion into this thread to support feedback processing and clarity for others who are sharing feedback notes. Please do continue the discussion or share any further thoughts in this thread by hitting "reply". Many thanks!

Hi, @LorenCPC, @Herbert Schiller, @AndreBurgess, @Geoffrey, @Antonios Tsourdos , @Kapil Mittal
Many thanks for your notes and comments on an earlier blog post on the roadmap. I would like to invite you to share your feedback and thoughts on the draft versions of the roadmap.

We invite feedback either on the roadmaps in their entirety (for example, does it cover all the key themes you would expect it to?) either as a reply in this thread on UAS, or here regarding eVTOL.

Or, on individual themes and in particular, our suggested recommendations, UAS themes here, and eVTOL themes here

Many thanks!
