  • Definition

heavier-than-air aircraft capable of vertical take-off, vertical landing, and low-speed flight, which depends principally on engine-driven lift devices or engine thrust for the lift during these flight regimes and on non-rotating aerofoil(s) for lift during horizontal flight.

NOTE: in addition to conventional phase of flight descriptions (e.g. take-off, climb, cruise, etc.), powered lift aircraft typically have an additional phase of flight, referred to as the transition phase, during which the primary means of generating lift transitions to/from the non-rotating aerofoils Also referred to as hybrid lift aircraft
